Comparison
Clottr vs Google Virtual Try-On
Last checked:
Google's virtual try-on shows clothes from its shopping results, first on a range of real models and, since 2025, on a full-length photo of you, in 18 countries as of October 2026. Clottr renders any garment, from any store or from your own closet, onto your own photo, and connects every try-on to the wardrobe you already have.
The difference is scope. Google's try-on is a feature of Google's shopping results; Clottr is a wardrobe app that also lets you try things on.
| Clottr | Google Try-On | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Any online store, in-store photos and your own closet | Products in Google's shopping results that support it |
| On whom | Your own photo | A range of models, or your own full-length photo |
| Full outfits | Single pieces or complete outfits on a canvas | One product at a time |
| Wardrobe memory | Knows what you own and checks new pieces against it | None |
| Purchase advice | Should I Buy: near-duplicates, outfit potential, cost-per-wear | Price tracking and deal alerts |
| Beyond try-on | Daily outfits, trip plans, wardrobe insights | Shopping search |
| Cost | Free tier, optional paid plan | Free |
How Google's virtual try-on works
Google launched virtual try-on for women's tops in June 2023, in the US. A generative AI model showed how a top drapes, folds and stretches on real models chosen to cover sizes from XXS to 4XL and a range of skin tones, body shapes and hair types. In 2025 Google added the option to upload a full-length photo of yourself and see supported shirts, pants, skirts and dresses on you in Search, Google Shopping and Google Images, and since October 2025 shoes as well. It started in the US and expanded to Canada, Australia, Japan, the UK and India by the end of 2025; Google lists 18 countries as of October 2026. Its Labs app Doppl, launched in June 2025 for full outfits, was shut down on April 30, 2026, as reported by Jetstream.
It's easy to reach, because it lives where you're already searching, and it's free. The renders handle drape and fabric convincingly.
What the research says about try-on
Seeing a product on yourself changes what people buy. In a study of a beauty retailer, customers who used augmented-reality try-on bought more, and the lift was largest for less popular products and for customers who were new to buying online (Tan, Chandukala and Reddy, 2022).
It matters because returns are expensive for everyone. US retailers estimated their returns at $890 billion in 2024 (National Retail Federation and Appriss Retail), and fit is one of the most common reasons clothes go back.
Try-on judges the look, not the size. Google's renders and Clottr's both show color, style and proportion on a body; neither tells you which size to order, so the store's size chart still has the last word.
Where Clottr goes further
Any store, not one results page. Paste a product link, upload a screenshot or take a photo in a shop. The browser extension, launching shortly after the app, adds try-on to the store page itself.
Whole outfits. Build a look on the canvas from tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories, mixing a new piece with your own jeans and shoes, and see the whole outfit on you at once.
Your wardrobe as context. Should I Buy checks a candidate against what you own for near-duplicates and outfit potential, and Clottr earns no commission on anything you buy.
What Google does better
There's nothing to install, and it sits right where you search. If you just want a quick look at one item you found on Google, that's hard to beat. Clottr asks for a little setup first: one full-body photo for try-on, and some of your clothes added for the wardrobe features.
What changed
October 29, 2026: Google's try-on with your own photo is no longer US-only (Google lists 18 countries) and covers shoes too, its 2023 launch was for women's tops, and Doppl was shut down in April 2026. We corrected all three, and added the date of our last check and a link to every source.

The verdict
If you shop through Google and want a quick look at one item, Google's try-on is convenient and free. If you want to try pieces from anywhere on your own photo, build whole outfits, and know whether a piece works with what you already own, Clottr goes further.

Does Clottr work outside Google Shopping?
Yes. Clottr works with items from any online store, photos you take in physical stores and the clothes already in your wardrobe. Paste a product link or upload a screenshot; the browser extension, launching shortly after the app, adds try-on to store pages.
Can Google's virtual try-on use my own photo?
Yes, for supported items: since 2025 you can upload a full-length photo in Search and Shopping; Google lists 18 countries as of October 2026. Clottr uses your own photo for every try-on, from any store or your own closet.
Can I try on a full outfit, not just one item?
In Clottr, yes: build a look on the canvas from tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories, mix new pieces with clothes you own, and see the whole outfit on you at once.
Which one is more accurate?
Both are AI renders made for judging how a piece looks, not how it fits, and neither tells you your size. Clottr keeps your own face in every result; if a render gets a detail wrong, run it again.
Is Google's virtual try-on free, and is Clottr?
Google's try-on is free to use in Search and Shopping. Clottr has a free tier that covers try-ons, Should I Buy checks and outfit generation, plus wardrobe and fit management; prices for the optional paid plan will be announced at public launch.
